beats studio 3 review

Update, June 1, 2018

CNET’s Best Headphones provides additional information about comparable products.

This is the Beats Stereo3 Wireless original review. It was published Nov 30, 2017.

You have something positive going so why try to rock the boat when you don’t have it?

Beats Studio3 Wireless is their flagship noise-canceling headphones, and it costs just $215, PS200, or AU$400. Except for a few color changes, it is almost identical to the predecessor that was launched four years ago.

My first reaction to seeing the “new” high-end Beats was probably the same as yours: “Wait, it has exactly the same design as the one that came out in 2014. Really?” Yes, really. The earpads were made slightly less firmer by some sewing tweaks.

However, if you look deeper into the device, there are many hidden changes. Beats are a superior headphone, both in terms of sound and battery life.

It’s the same outside as it is inside.

You can share all sharing options for Beats Studio 3 wireless review: Bifurcating ecosystems

Whenever you hear or read the word “wireless,” it’s most often followed by the word “freedom.” Wireless freedom. This is what headphone manufacturers, wireless charging advocates, and gaming mouse specialists promise. The literal and symbolic shedding of wires is a liberation for the user from technological friction. It has almost always been so.

The world we are living in is a topsy-turvy, where new wireless technology actually keeps us locked in even more than it allows us to be free. Welcome to Beats Studio 3 Wireless. At $350, this latest Beats version features Apple’s outstanding W1 wireless processor and improved noise cancelling. You can use them with any Apple product seamlessly syncing, stable Bluetooth connectivity, and long battery life. Try using them with a Google Pixel, a Chromebook, or a Windows PC, as I did, and you’ll find most of their strengths diminished. As my colleague Nilay Patel wrote recently, the future of headphones is shaping up to be a realm divided by the wireless tech that was once our liberator The big challenge of assessing the Beats Studio 3 is that they’re two fundamentally different pairs of headphones depending on whether you have them hooked up to an iPhone or an Android device. Now let’s get down to the important performance points. Let’s start with comfort and design.

It is a bit more classy with matte finishes than gloss. Beats headphones has been an example of this. Plastic is the best material. You should not dismiss plastic gadgets as bad. Beats headphones are no longer viewed negatively for their poor design and ineffective marketing. The Studio 3 is similar to the Solo 3 that I reviewed last year and has a decent build quality. It should withstand reasonable abuse.

Wind noise is the only problem with Studio 3 headphones. Noise-canceling headphones are supposed to be all about ensuring tranquility and an escape from the world around you, but I found a consistent (and disruptive) wind noise coming in from the outside on windier days in London. You can solve this problem by tilting your head to the side.

My recent review of the Studio 3 cost $350. It was close enough to my love for the $450 noise-canceling Bowers & Wilkins PX. Although the PX cans are far more durable and high-quality than these Beats cans, they have the advantage of being collapsible. Beats can also fold up the Studio 3s and put them in the hardwearing bag. It’s much easier and more convenient than using a B&W camera. Beats has to face yet another powerful rival, the $350 Sony1000XM2, the successor of the critically acclaimed 1000X. Although the 1000XM2 does not collapse like their predecessor, they also have a much more solid case that is noise-cancelling and are stronger.

Studio 3s provide a snug and comfy fit that is comfortable enough to be worn during extended listening sessions. Some people won’t like how they touch the entire ear. B&W PX are designed to wrap around the ear more closely, which makes them less contact with the skull. Studio 3s provide a great deal of passive noise reduction. That is, the Studio 3s can still be worn on your head, without using any active technology. This close contact also means they function a lot like simple ear muffs which is brilliant in cold winters and kind of a nightmare in the summer heat.

If you’re comfortable with the greater intimacy of the Beats 3 design (and undaunted by visions of sweaty summer listening), there’s really very little to fault about these headphones’ fit. They don’t cause any uncomfortable hotspots of pressure at the top of the head, their headband is easily adjustable and doesn’t create unsightly divots in your hairstyle, and their weight of 260g (9oz) makes them effortlessly portable. The control panel on the left of my ear cup was simple and easy to use. There are two buttons for volume adjustment; one for pausing.

When pairing with an iPhone running iOS 10 or later, you’ll see the only visual clue of Apple’s W1 chip at work. It sits above Bluetooth and is combined with iOS to improve pairing and maximize battery life.

Apple W1 chips enhance Bluetooth to make pairing easier and last longer. Holding the power button puts the Studio 3’s in pairing mode. Any iOS device placed near it will trigger a popup. A rotating animated image of the headphones will prompt you to choose ‘connect. Accept, and you’re done, couldn’t be more straightforward.

Once paired to one Apple device, iCloud syncs it across all other Apple devices, including iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, for playback.

Of note, within Bluetooth settings on an iPhone 8 Plus running iOS 11, you can also enable and disable the Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) – a nice touch.

Android-powered devices can only pair the same way as other Bluetooth devices, without any benefits that the W1 chips offers. Others have reported that pairing non-Apple devices was difficult, however we were not affected by such problems. Beats Studio 3 worked well with both our Samsung Galaxy S8+ (running Android Nougat) and Sony Xperia XZ Premium. Even pairing with my trusty gym phone, a Moto G 4G running Lollipop proved straightforward. While it’s possible the issue could have been resolved by a firmware upgrade, I recommend testing this first with a demo unit purchased at your local retailer.
