Callaway Epic Driver Review
The Test
December was my Belfry visit. I wanted to have a look at and take a swing around the PGA National with Epic. Callaway sent me a fitting kit and I was able to fit myself in the proper shaft. Then I went inside and tested the drivers at LSH Auto, Mercedes Benz Stockport with Trackman 4 and Titleist ProV1x.
I then decided my favourite head and took the club for some more extensive testing during my rounds of golf over Christmas and New Year.

Callaway Epic Big Bertha Driver Review
Before I began reviewing equipment for you pleasure, I was a marketing graduate.
Therefore when someone decides that they are going to name a driver Epic, then it had better be the real deal as there are not many places to go after that if you get it wrong.
But in certain ways it’s refreshing to see companies stake out their ground once in a while and say ‘here’. The Callaway Great Big Bertha Epic driver’s arrival has the potential of being one of those moments.
Callaway was the pioneer in COR regulations in 2003. Models like the ERC were fast-driving and Callaway is now back with their Jailbreak technology.
It solves the problem of the crown and sole diverging at impact as the face gets stretched vertically and loses energy. Callaway can stiffen the skull by inserting two titanium bars of 3g into the frame behind the mouth to link the sole and crown. This allows the head to move more freely, increasing ball speed.
It is a common phrase that I use to write thinner crowns/lower CG/save weight so often I am reciting it. However, the Epic Triaxial Carbon crown has a 30% reduction in thickness and is 64% lighter than its predecessor. In fact, 52% of this body now contains Triaxial Carbon. This Epic is based on the Callaway Big Bertha Fusion driver’s Titan exoskeleton. But the Epic now creates the carbon as a single unit which is bonded with the titanium
designer Doc Hoc and the boys 37g to play around with and they combine this with a face that is 20% thinner than the XR 16 driver to convert that club head speed into ball speed more efficiently.
