Callaway Mavrik Irons Review

Looking at the Mavrik iron next to the Mavrik PRO, it became apparent that this had a significantly larger footprint and more square features.

There was some offset but that was not what I was looking for when I called Callaway to get my game-improvement iron.

Feel The Mavrik irons actually sounded very good for an iron of this size, particularly when compared to the Ping G710 which I tested recently and sit in a similar game-improvement/premium position in the iron market. Callaway uses urethane microscopic spheres to reduce vibrations during impact.

These are really rockets.

Consistency I was testing the irons at Trafford golf centre when I noticed that the launch monitor had failed. The numbers were amazing!

I had 161 yards to go, and then a total of 169 yards. This was my second shot with the day.

Okay, so the loft was closer to 6 irons, as well as the shaft length. However, spin rate and peak height are exactly what you would expect with 7 irons, which is something that wasn’t true with my EPIC Forged irons last year.

Callaway Mavrik Irons Verdict

I have tested every Mavrik model, and while the Pro and Standard Mavrik seem to be the most understandable models, the Max doesn’t feel necessary. A 5 handicap golfer asked me to choose the Mavrik iron.

It is minimalistic in appearance, but the Mavrik delivers so much more performance-wise. It is long, forgiving and really easy to launch – basically everything you’d want from a game-improvement iron.

According to me, the Max is unnecessary. If you are a golfer who wants to hit an 8 iron when everyone else hits a 7, then this Mavrik is for you. One of the best things about the Mavrik is its sound and flight. It flies as fast as a 7 iron. It’s also more forgiving than you might think, so it doesn’t make sense to buy a bigger head.

It was always a mystery to me why my wedges had two faces, but my seven other irons have the same face. Fair play to Callaway for attempting to rectify this with their different face in each club through the bag.

If I was to rate this separately, I’d give the Mavrik irons 5 stars and the Max 3 stars. It will have to be 4, since I am reviewing both of them simultaneously. It was an admirable job and could have helped Callaway climb to the top of irons tree.

Callaway Mavrik Iron Series At A Glance

Callaway has made sure their Mavrik series can be appealing for players of any skill level, from the scratch golfer to the pure beginner golfer. Callaway created three Mavrik Iron options with different specs and profiles.

These irons come in three different categories: standard Mavrik, Mavrik pro, and Mavrik max. Both the Standard and Max irons have more forgiveness and range, and the Mavrik Max is designed for more advanced golfers.

You don’t want to get into the technical details of the review? This is a quick breakdown on who should use each set.

Best if you have a low handicap:

Best for the Mid Handicap Crowd

After trying the Mavrik Max, Standard and Standard 6-irons, I discovered that the Standard worked best for me. The shots were smooth and I felt more distance than the Max 6 iron and Pro. Right away, the Pro seemed to be better suited for lower handicap golfers than the Standard. However, the Callaway Mavrik Maximum’s larger clubheads offer greater forgiveness and more launch angles, which makes them one of my favorite sets to hit.

Callaway Mavrik is also called Standard in the range. This iron is for golfers with a mid-handicap who desire a player’s iron feel and look, but without losing distance or forgiveness.

These are the core features that we examined with Callaway Mavrik irons.

You can’t help but notice that the irons appear to be a game-improvement iron when they are placed at their address. They have a mid-large clubhead profile, with some pretty visible offset, which is to be expected. You will feel a lot more confident when these irons are in your hand than if you were a lower handicapper. They have a square shape and feature a high top toe. These irons look fantastic, and have a medium-sized profile.

Five shots were smashed with the 6-iron Standard, Pro, or Max in my Callaway Mavrick test. I used a Taylormade TP5x golf ball, and compared it to the launch monitor.

Here is how the Standard set performed:

I was told by a friendly staff member at the local golf shop that Standard irons are extremely fast. Evidently he had some idea of what he was referring to, since the Mavriks achieved 5-mph greater ball speeds than the Mavrik Max and Mavrik Pro.

This increased speed of the ball resulted is greater carrying capacity and a longer distance.

Callaway Mavrik irons: Review of the Highlights

Here’s a review of some of the most notable moments from the Mavrik Irons.

Flash Face Cup Flash Face Cup is all in the design of each lofty iron. This sophisticated form of facial architecture creates thinner zones around the skin’s edges. It is enclosed by a larger, circular cap.

The flash 360 face cup architecture allows more incredible speed and maneuvering the ball spin and spin rate. The Flash Face Cup and artificial intelligence are what make the Mavrik Irons the speed machines.

A further improvement is the reduction of the ball spin and spin speed, which allows for more forgiveness.

Tungsten Core Callaway engineers and designers were able to insert tungsten core into the cavity’s rear. Custom tungsten-infused weights placed at the back allow the center gravity (CG), to be adjusted to the correct position to aid in ball flight and launch.

Callaway engineers are able to achieve a strong launch and loft from every iron of the Callaway Mavrisk Metal set by using the Tungestor Energy Core. Proper launch conditions result from this. Each iron number is used to calculate the land angle and trajectories.

It is about feel, sound, and feedback. This is what golf is all about. When the ball hits the ground, sound and sensation are created. It is then realized as vibrations. It is then shifted from the golf club head to the hands through the shaft and grip.
