For 2020, the all-new Cleveland Launcher driver was designed to hit it higher and straighter. It also has a new cup face and a higher balance point shaft, which makes it more efficient.

Cleveland Launcher’s name has become synonymous with fare. Many versions of Launcher’s iconic driver made it into the bags of players dating back to before 400cc drivers. These were composite products, such as Cleveland Comp. It’s not an understatement to say the club transformed Cleveland’s metal wood segment.

After a bit of a hiatus, the Launcher name was relaunched (sorry, had to do it) two years ago to glowing reviews and positive player feedback. Cleveland engineers decided that 2020 was the right time to boost the driver.

Performance and feeling

Initial testing with the Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo featured the stock Miyazaki C. Kua shaft. This shaft features a lovely counterbalance design. The clubhead model of 9.0 degrees was tested by the reviewer.

We’ll just say it: This driver is loud. The sound at impact is sharp, thanks to the thin face mentioned above. The sound does not suggest cheapness, but players who are used to driving in muted environments will have to adapt.

Launcher HB Turbo will take you far more distances than the sound. Comparing to his competitor, the average distance travelled by our reviewer was 17 miles more. Spin rates ranged from 2300 – 2600 RPM. However, launch came in just under 12 degrees, which was less than we had expected. This may be because the reviewer is more likely to catch it lower on their face. As solid drives were launched higher, launch was above 14 degrees.

Forgiveness and dispersion was very encouraging as well. Shoots from the heel or the toe were well oriented back toward the center line. These shots showed distance loss that was not severe but noticeable.

GolfWRX is a Cleveland Golf partner that allowed me to play this test. I’m an 18-year-old cap and play 1 or 2 rounds per month. I also enjoy the occasional 9 hole, depending on my free time. I don’t have any kid-related obligations. Although I picked up the game in college, it wasn’t until I was mid-30s that I began to take golf seriously. Although I was never fit to drive, I still enjoy trying out new things in stores and ordering the shafts or heads online. While I have been known to be Titleist-oriented, the experience of being able to test out something new is an amazing blessing after having had some issues with my drivers the previous couple trips. Let’s get to it!

Last time I was in Cleveland, it was either a Classic or 290 270 or 289 290. It was about five or six years ago. Although it was an enjoyable driver, I didn’t think that I would pick up the car as I was happy with my current gamer. The club’s look appealed to me as someone who likes old-school stuff. The Launcher turbo is on the far end, but this one I enjoy. Although it may look busy from the top, I didn’t notice any difference when I got to my address. As someone who loves murdered-out everything, I like the design of this club. Speaking of address, it does appear to sit a little closed.

After warming up on the range, 10 shots were taken with each of the Cleveland or my current opponent. They alternated until I was done. The SC100 was a used eBay item that I got as a second-hand toy. At the end of the test, the average carrying distance with the Cleveland was 249 yards. My one difference was my tendency to make my weak draws hooks with my driver, even though the Launcher Turbo was straight and not fading. I tried to hook the Turbo a few times but those ended up being severe draws more than what I would call a hook. The Launcher also had a noticeably higher ball flight.

As I was getting used to the Cleveland driver, I noticed some of my mishits away from the center of the face were carrying 240y or so and were still traveling mostly center or right. It was one of my first lessons in playing golf that I realized. Try to get on the other side. High handicappers like myself could certainly benefit from this. It is not something I have the ability to do. Knowing where it is heading even when the ball goes missing is important for me. More testing is definitely needed and I am looking forward to using it for an actual round.

One thing I have found lacking in this otherwise excellent product is a high-pitched ping. While it may not be as bothersome as the 915D3 model I owned, this is not something I’d choose to have make a lot of noise every time my driver was in use. It’s a fantastic driver that will help you with your consistency. Although this will likely be my next round’s bag, early results indicate that this might outperform my current gamer.
