How Thin Are You?
Prestige 14’s 14 inch laptop is as light and thin as it can be. The Prestige 14 is 0.63 in thick, 12.6in wide and 8.6in deep, much like the last-year’s model. Despite the ever-so-slightly larger chassis, it’s a couple of ounces lighter than its predecessor at 2.66 pounds. The Prestige 14’s chassis is noticeably smaller than that of its 14 inch rival, HP EliteBook 845G7 (0.7 by 12.7 by 8.5 in HWD). It weighs 2.93 lbs. While the Dell XPS 13 13.4 inches is smaller (0.58, 11.6, 7.8inches) it’s slightly heavier (2.8 pounds). Prestige 14 will be your best choice for a lightweight, easy-to use travel companion.

The aluminum used for the Prestige 14 feels thin and flexes on the lid and bottom panel. The keyboard deck provides more support and is less flexible when you type. However, it’s worth carrying a couple extra ounces to get a stiffer top and bottom.
The backlit keyboard feels roomy and allowed me to get immediately comfortable. While the travel is not very deep, they are responsive and quick. They’re also among the most silent keys I have used. No keys have been shortened, not even all of the cursor-arrow keys.
Overall, the typing experience on the Prestige 14 is outstanding, particularly when you factor in how the bottom edge of the display props up the keyboard. As you open the lid, the laptop’s bottom edge lifts up from the base to create a five-degree angle for typing.
It makes me less happy about the touchpad. MSI sticks a fingerprint reader in the top left corner, but you aren’t likely to hit it by accident because of the pad’s extreme width, which mirrors the wide 16:9 aspect ratio of the screen. I don’t mind the width of the touchpad, nor do I care about the accuracy with my swipes, pinches or other gestures. My only complaint is its fragility when clicked, especially at the bottom. It has so much travel I am worried about coins falling down the corners.

MSI’s Prestige 14 laptop is traditionally targeted for content creators. But the Prestige 14 Evo is in a bit of a murkier spot. It’s priced below the Prestige 14, starting at $1,099, and it doesn’t have the discrete GPU or high-resolution screen that would render it a compelling content-creation machine. The Prestige 14 Evo, contrary to its name is a daily productivity laptop.
Unfortunately this makes the decision even more difficult. At this price, the 14-inch laptop area is very crowded. However, there are several machines available at very similar prices that will do nearly everything. A laptop with even one significant drawback is going to have trouble rising to the top of the pack. Unfortunately, the Prestige 14 Evo has a number of them.
The device has many great features. It is the only 14-inch notebook that comes with the Core i7-1185G7 Intel ultraportable chip. This review is my first look at the flagship processor (outside of a reference design that I had for a few days last year) most of the top laptops that I’ve reviewed recently include the Core i7-1165G7, which is a step down.
This is why the Prestige 14 Evo 14-inch Intel laptop at this price level is undoubtedly the most powerful. However, does this make the 1185G7 perform better than any other Intel system or Apple’s M1 MacBooks? The answer for most users is no.

It’s not much different from the Prestige 14 chassis. The Evo has the same lightweight build with a fold-under hinge, a fingerprint sensor in the top-left corner of the touchpad, and a decent keyboard that’s plasticky but comfortable overall. The model I am using is “carbon gray”, but there are also options in “rose rose” and white. MSI’s famous dragon has been limited to MSI Gaming models. Now, the Prestige uses the same MSI letters and business-chic Summit Series. Rearranged ports are also available. The Evo has two USB C ports to the left, as well a USB A and microSD. Prestige’s last-year had the microSD on one side and an additional USB A on another. I’m sad to lose the additional USB-A (and the one that’s there is only USB 2.0, which is an old standard at this point), but it’s an okay port selection either way.

MSI’s laptops from the Creator series have always intrigued and enthralled me. These are laptops that appear to be gaming-grade, but they target creative professionals and have features tailored to them. It’s a nice idea on paper, but cramming hot, powerful hardware in a thin and light chassis might not be the best of ideas.
For this reason, I was disappointed by the PS63 Modern Review, my first laptop from this series. Is the Prestige 14 following in my footsteps? Or have things changed this time?

Verdict: Lack Of Purpose
It’s hard for me to pinpoint the Prestige 14’s niche. It’s a shame, really, because I like the design of the Prestige 14. Sadly, the device does cost a little over Rs 1.2 lakhs and issues like USB 2.0, soft speakers, and the tendency to run hot just can’t be ignored.
It’s possible to see the Prestige 14 used as an additional laptop, for transcoding or streaming, but I doubt it will be of much use beyond this.

Msi Prestige 14 Evo Specifications
Intel’s Evo sticker removes emphasis on the CPU generation and tier – the Core i7 name no longer appears to be a visible footnote. Intel’s Iris Xe, which is integrated within the CPU, is being given more attention. This is not to be confused, however, with the discrete Iris Xe Max which can also be seen in Acer Swift 3X. However, this 11th generation ‘Tiger Lake” CPU, here the Core i7-1185G7. It has a 12-28W rated TDP range and runs between 1.2GHz – 4.8GHz. This CPU supports Hyper-Threading on four cores, PCIe 2.0 is supported, and it uses Intel’s SuperFin 10-nm manufacturing process.
MSI has chosen a 14-inch Full-HD “IPS Level” screen which provides close to 100 per cent of the sRGB range. It’s a low-power panel with a relatively low 300nit maximum brightness, and as mentioned, has a non-reflective surface. MSI says that the battery has a 52Wh capacity and can provide 12 hours of productive use per charge. The battery can be charged quickly, meaning you’ll get about an hour of use per charge after 15 minutes.
Priced at Rs. 95,990 comes with an 11th Gen Core i5 Core CPU. However, there are a few differences in RAM and storage configurations. The Core i7 processor, 16GB LPDDR4 RAM and, most importantly, a 512GB PCIe 4.0 SATA SSD were all available in my review unit. All this for just Rs. 1,06,990. The RAM is soldered down while the SSD (Standard, Replaceable M.2 Module) is made by Phison. Bluetooth 5.1 is also available. You can also capture videos at up to 720p with the webcam.
Windows 10 Home was installed on the review unit. MSI however claims that Windows 10 Professional will be available. There was an evaluation version of Norton LifeLock Security and also some of MSI’s own utilities. MSI Center for Business and Productivity (an awkwardly-named MSI Center for Business and Productivity) starts automatically at boot. Users must then quit and reboot it in Administrator mode the first time they use it. It isn’t very well designed and doesn’t offer a lot of features – certainly nothing that justifies its name. There are four performance options: Balanced, Super, High performance and Silent. Some basic diagnostics can be performed and the ability to limit your battery’s charge may help you prolong your battery’s lifespan.

MSI’s new lightweight notebook, the Prestige 14 Evo, impresses with its latest Intel 11th-gen Tiger Lake processors and a sophisticated, diamond-finished design.
MSI is also a good choice. It has a strong screen and big bold keys. The MSI review model that I am reviewing here retails for PS1,099 UK, or $999 US. While all of this sounds wonderful, there’s no doubt that 14in laptops are facing a lot more competition than ever before. MSI’s machine needs to be impressive.

The MSI definitely looks nice. Its carbon grey body features a diamond-cut edge around the trackpad, as well as a sunken keyboard. The hinge pitches the base upwards for better cooling and easier typing, while the lid folds back to completely flat to allow for easier collaboration.
The good looks impress, but testing time reveals that the MSI is inconsistent. You can see the MSI’s build quality in its MIL-STD-810G certificate. It is designed to withstand falls, drops and knocks. But there is too much movement and flex above the keyboard.
Design
MSI’s Prestige 14 Evo avoids most of the MSI laptop branding’s gaming styling. MSI also replaced their famous dragon logo, with a stylized MSI. It is a bold logo with subtle colors, which blends nicely into the background. MSI will offer the Prestige 14 Evo with a Carbon Gray or Pure White color scheme. This review unit is the latter. Although the Pure White looks great in photos, they are somewhat amplified by white display bezels. The Carbon Gray is very similar to other Ultrabooks available on the market, which may be a deliberate attempt. One of the design cues is subtlety.
Uncovering the laptop’s back reveals one of the best design elements. MSI decided to use a display hinge, which raises the laptop’s rear 5deg. The hinge is supposed to provide a better typing experience. But, like other laptops, ergonomics are not the best. Some people may prefer a better view of the keyboard, but for your wrists, this isn’t the best design. It does help with cooling, however. The bottom of the laptop would not be pressed against anything that could block airflow. MSI is able to maintain stability open better than other laptops using a tilt-hinge. It is well held by rubber feet.
MSI markets the Prestige 14 saying it has ultra-thin bezels. This is pretty typical for a new laptop design. However, bezels of this model are smaller than those on other laptops. While the bezel on the top can hold both an ordinary webcam or IR for Windows Hello login (which is quite large), the webcam only supports 720p. Unfortunately, the bottom of this display is too large. There are plenty of empty spaces that could have been used as a way to make it taller like some competitors. While the standard 16:9 aspect ratio remains industry-standard for display design, it is no longer the best. There are several other designs that have 16:10 aspect ratios or even 3:2 aspect rates.
MSI’s gaming line generally has the most advanced keyboards. MSI often uses SteelSeries keyboards, however, this is not the case. Prestige’s keyboard is a white backlit keyboard with three brightness settings. The keys have 1.5mm of travel which, for such a light and thin device, is quite impressive. However, the keyboard feel is a little lacking in feedback and there’s no way to sculpt the key caps with the chicklet design. You may have to learn to adapt to the keyboard layout. As an example, Fn shares a key-with the right Ctrl. It is possible to use just one finger to push Fn and Ctrl, which can be a great advantage. Although the layout is not standard, it can be difficult to master. However the full-size navigation keys on right and arrow keys in the left hand corner make up the difference. Overall the keyboard is decent, but it’s not amazing.
MSI’s trackpad choice is also definitely non-standard, with the Prestige 14 offering an ultra-wide trackpad. An integrated fingerprint reader can be found at the top of the trackpad, giving owners the option to choose from multiple biometric options when logging in. This trackpad, which is made from glass, proved very smooth in tests. It did not hinder typing. It is very efficient.
MSI’s expandability is excellent. Right side has a USB Type A connector for USB 2.0 and micro SD card slots. Headset jack is available on the left. Left side has two Thunderbolt 4 port, while charging can be done through the Type C connector. As most people have the old style connector, keeping a USB Type A connection is an appreciated feature. Having two Thunderbolt 4 connections allows the laptop to both charge and access the Thunderbolt 4 port for expansion. Type-C has been the rage among laptop designers. While it may be the future of computing, dongles still have their place. MSI is proud to continue offering both types.
The Prestige 14 by MSI is an admirable laptop design. However, the Prestige 14 lacks the wow factor found in other laptops within the same price bracket. Although it is made from high quality materials, the design feels somewhat bland. It has a lightweight and thin design but is not the lightest. The display bezels are thin, but it is not the smallest. While it does have a trackpad as well as a keyboard, this device isn’t the best. It is very balanced in design. Some flash may help it stick out a bit.
