Why you should trust us

Liz Clayton wrote this update for 2018. She’s a professional coffee writer, with over 10 years experience making and tasting coffee. Alex Arpaia was also an associate editor for the coffee news website Sprudge. Alex is a Wirecutter staff member at that time, and a keen coffee fan. Alex researched coffee machinery, reviewed the list of Specialty Coffee Association-certified home brewers, as well as interacting with former contenders. To test the machines, we took our best contenders to Coffee Project NY’s SCA certified training center, Queens. It is the only SCA training location in New York. We dialed them in, and Chi Sum Ngai taste-tested each one.

Marguerite Preston is a senior editor and edits Wirecutter coffee coverage. She tested the OXO Brew 9 Cup Coffee Maker with the Bonavita Connoisseur.

Cale Guthrie Weissman is a National Barista Championship finalist and a coffee writer. This guide draws on his research.

We have also hired the skills of in past years for testing.

Counter Culture Coffee ‘s New York City team; they helped us fine-tune our testing criteria and evaluate each coffee maker both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Charles Babinski is the 2015 United States Barista Champion. He was also co-founders of Los Angeles’ G&B Coffee, Go Get Em Tiger and G&B Coffee. His unpretentious approach to coffee drinking has made him a household name.

Humberto Ricardo, the proprietor of Third Rail Coffee on Manhattan.

What is Good?

The machine’s slim, sleek design was my first impression. It measures only nine inches in diameter and features a black-and-silver motif similar to its predecessor, Barista Brain. You also have four buttons to control the machine: power and 2-4 cups brewing.

Oxo 8-cup is a SCA-certified coffee brewer. This means that I could tell that it was good coffee from the beginning. Oxo also clarified that only coffees brewed in the 5-8 cup size were SCA-certified as they have yet to establish standards for single-serving coffee. Oxo’s trademarked Rainmaker showerhead is used in the Oxo 8-cup. It literally rains water on coffee beans. For a better extraction and a smoother taste, this process makes sure all coffee grounds are evenly saturated. To prevent bitterness and overextraction, the water heats to maximum 205F. Additionally, because the thermal cup keeps the coffee hot, it does away with the need to heat the pot.

OXO’s Rainmaker showerhead ensures all your coffee grounds stay wet.

As a single-serving coffee machine, the Oxo 8-cup is a great choice. The Oxo 8-cup can brew single-serving coffee in a one-cup (ten ounce) or four-cup (20 grams) cup. Oxo recommends that you use the additional single-serving accessory if you are brewing less than four cups. This looks similar to a Kalita Wave dripper but uses the same filter to decrease the coffee surface area.

My single-serve coffee brewed with the single serve functionality had floral and citrus characteristics that I didn’t notice when making a full cup. Surprisingly, I found the coffee tasted almost exactly like what I’d brew with my Chemex. It was not as fresh or bright. As it happens, Chemex-brewed coffee has been my everyday coffee for 4 years. I am more used to pour-over coffee. My Chemex is still available in the 8-cup.

Review of Oxo Coffee Maker: The 8 Cup Is Worth It?

Virtually every coffee lover in the world has, at some point or another, wished for a coffee maker that’s as dependable as it is excellent at making coffee. That’s what we know. Unfortunately many coffee makers these days don’t meet this criteria.

All too often they are not able to be flexible or reliable. Those who seem to do it all usually do so at the expense of great-tasting coffee. The taste of your coffee, as much as any other feature in a coffee maker’s coffee machine should be respected, isn’t it?

The Moccamaster is not the only exception. OXO Brew 8 – Cup Coffee Maker, which has received a lot of positive feedback from customers is one fan-favorite drip espresso maker. However, is the price worth it? Or should you save your cash and stick with the ‘not as pleasing, but somewhat reliable’ one?

Just so you know, if you click on a product and decide to buy it, we may earn a small commission.
