Pompeian Review

While Pompeian was able to get one less vote for first place than Goya, our winner, however, olive oil tasters were mixed in their Pompeian review. A majority of those who loved it said the oil “smelled light”, had an excellent “olive flavor,” and didn’t have the strong spiciness common in low-priced olive oils. Despite the fact that it was “not as extremely peppery,” something lingered after the bread went down, and some testers in our olive oil review found that aftertaste a little too bitter and “sting-y.” The oil is a solid all-around oil and can be used to saute or top off cooked meals like grilled meats.

Cheap Olive Oil Taste Test

For our olive oil reviews, we asked for feedback from the five oils’ tasters on their appearances, flavors, and aftertaste. None of the tasting participants knew which oils they were sampling. However, all the oils were dispersed into identical containers with labels A through D.

Colavita was expected to win, as it is the most expensive brand. But, Goya came out on top. According to the tasters, it was a light lemony oil with little bitterness and a peppery aftertaste. Pompeian came in second place for olive oil, despite being a cheap option.

Colavita is one oil among the five that came in the green bottles in our olive-oil review. The others are in clear bottles. This matters because light is an enemy of olive oil, as cooking blog The Kitchn explains. (Officially, they weren’t able to see the bottles, so it didn’t affect their taste buds. If you buy cheap olive oil in a large bottle, decant it into something smaller and put the rest in the pantry. It should be kept away from heat, as well.

The appearance of the olive oils in our test containers was remarkably similar. While some of our testers felt that the olive oils in the Trader Joe’s or Pompeian containers looked slightly greener (though they were all the same color), others thought the oil had the exact same golden color.
