Whiskey Review. Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey

Do you want your whiskey to punch you as hard as a UFC Champion? No, not me. But I’m still willing to try this new “owned” celebrity spirit, just to see if it can punch you as hard as a UFC Champion.

Conor McGregor is the UFC’s superstar. As a tribute to Crumlin (a Dublin suburb), Twelve Irish Whiskey was released last year. His whiskey is triple distilled from wheat and barley in Ireland. He bottled it at 80 proof, aged three years in ex-bourbon barrels, and it’s pretty straightforward stuff.

The packaging is decent, the bottle is made of green glass and has a weight and character to it that makes you feel you should be pulling it out of a wooden crate filled with sawdust from Prohibition. It is clearly noted on the label how smooth, rich and well balanced it feels, and features a picture of a tiger with a crown at its center. Conor McGregor might be linked to it as fighters are known for being fierce predators. I don’t think any of them want to associate with pictures of penguins, bunnies or penguins.

But beyond what the bottle claims, I found the story and juice inside lacking. McGregor hired another person to mix the alcohol for him because celebrities don’t usually know how it works. The whiskey for this expression is drawn from Bushmills stock before being influenced by Elder and McGregor.

It would be great to break that trend. But then, how do you find out that the Proper No. The new Irish whiskey brand 12 has been launched by Conor McGregor (former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion). It’s obvious what kind of bind I find myself in.

Now let’s clear the air: It is indeed a celebrity-owned and endorsed spirit. McGregor is also the proprietor of Eire Born Spirits. Some marketing attempts make it appear that this distillery has everything you need. McGregor’s own company has 12 distilled. This is the standard Irish blended whiskey. This is to say that it’s very similar to basic blended Irish whiskeys. McGregor marketing claims that this whiskey is a high-end product. Yet, McGregor has more to it than other well-known Irish whiskeys such as Bushmills, Jameson, or Tullamore Dew. This is not a bad thing. It just gives a better idea of what the product actually looks like. Although it’s not a whisky for mixed drinks, it is a good choice.

Then, let’s move onto Paste. What is it like to actually taste? Let’s just say that it is basic. Very basic, although that’s not necessarily a negative. While the whiskey geeks have not been glowing on the stuff, it is hard to believe that many of them aren’t appraising the liquor in the glass with the same level of accuracy as Proper No. 12 to a harder standard because the distillery’s contentious prizefighter of an owner is a guy who tends to rub people the wrong way. This kind of cherry picking is not my thing, so I will simply say that Proper No. 12. is an excellent example of Irish blended whiskey.

On the nose, Proper Number 12. Twelve presents have mild aromas of honey, green apples, and caramel. Some of that caramel is washed away with raw booziness. It is hot for its average proof (40% ABV), however, it loses some of the alcohol flavors as it sits inside the glass. You will also notice mild notes like pine and grass. All things considered, it is mildly neutral and none of the notes (except for alcohol) are assertive.

On the palate, Proper No. 12 is actually less booze dominated, which is to its credit. It is light in body, easy to drink, and has a mild to moderate honey-grape-nuts maltiness. The finish is dry and slightly medicinal. Because this stuff is so simple, there aren’t many other notes to make. Although it is not complex in any way, the alcohol presentation can be a little more rough than one might like. It has been awhile since I last tried Tullamore Dew and Bushmills Jameson.

Proper No. 12 has a MSRP price of $25. (The press release said “up to $30”). Proper No. 12 is aimed at a slightly larger segment of whiskey drinkers, and would cost $25 (the press release says “up to $30”), so it’s a no-brainer that this product will be priced higher than a comparable $20 bottle. It’s not worth it, but I would spend $50 on something like Redbreast 12Year or Egan 10Year.

“Think of me as the parental advisory sticker on albums that you don’t think that your kid should buy but they buy anyway.” He also joked it makes people want to ‘hit old men’ in a clear dig at the MMA fighter over him punching a man in a Dublin pub in April.

Dwyer has not given whiskey a “no score” rating before. He has given Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel an 8.5 out of 10, Robin Red Breast 12 an 7.5 out of 10, and Green Spot 7 out of 10. Dwyer explained to viewers that Ireland’s whiskey distilleries have increased in number in recent years.

He stated that the number could go up from around two during the 1970s with Bushmills and Jameson, to approximately 40 in the next ten.

Swaggering

Dwyer finally swallowed the words and said to his fans, “It has as much depth that his personality.” Before he was seen swaggering around the room imitating the MMA fighter’s distinctive gait, he took another swipe at Dwyer.

Is Proper Number 12 Any Good?

Proper 12 whiskey is smooth and soft. One might think that a UFC fighter would want it to taste strong. It is disappointingly light-bodied. However, the flavor of bourbon casks imparts some needed character.

Does Proper 12 Taste Like Jameson?

Taste. Both are delightfully soft and smokey.
Jameson is softer and more smooth.
However, the proper Twelve display has just a touch of warmth and body.
You can also add a sprinkle of delicious tingling spicy to it.
Adds to the appeal. Jameson is your archetypal, easy to drink blend.

Mcgregor Has How Much Proper 12.

Conor McGregor, UFC superstar, and his business partners Audie Attar, and Ken Austin sold their majority share in Proper No Twelve Irish whiskey for more than $600 million to Proximo Spirits. Proximo Spirits purchased a 20% share in the brand’s 2018 sale and increased its stake to 49% last year.
