Sound & Feel

If you read my review of the SIM2 driver, you know that I love the feel of that club. I was afraid I’d be disappointed when I bought the SIM2 Max driver. Sometimes the more forgiving driver can feel a lot better than the players. It was quite a surprise to discover that the SIM2 Max driver feels the same as the SIM2.

SIM2 Max golf balls feel extremely solid, and produce a “crack” sound at mid-pitch. This makes it a great club to hit.

The SIM2 Max driver provides excellent feedback though, despite being forgiving. If you pay attention, you’ll have no issue determining where the ball met the face. There is one small and surprising difference between SIM2 Max & SIM2: I got more audio feedback from SIM2Max.

Performance

A clear image of the SIM2 Max can be seen by reading TaylorMade’s lights on SIM2 driver’s. This technology is identical to the SIM2 – Speed Injected Twine, Forged Ring Construction, SIM Inertia Generator. They both have the maximum allowed 460 cc. SIM2 Max’s differences include being billed as “Mid Launch” rather than low and “Highest Forgiveness”, instead of high.

While I wish I could say I found something significantly different during my testing, it wasn’t. TaylorMade has claimed that the SIM2 Max driver offers a higher launching speed and is more flexible than the SIM2. (Number lovers rejoice: you can see the LM numbers from this review in comparison to the SIM2).

Both changes made by SIM2 were positive for me. With the SIM2, there was an increase in ball speed and forgiveness. To my average carrying distance, a slightly lower launch angle and spin contributed to some improvement. Although the differences were not significant, I believe they could grow with a bigger sample. You should also mention that I have a low spin score so there may be larger differences in spin between SIM2 and SIM3 driver heads.

Forgiveness

At this point, there’s little doubt that the SIM2 Max is more forgiving than the SIM2. And this was definitely borne out in my testing.

My mis-hits just perform better using SIM2 Max. Distance results are more similar to solid strikes and all but my worst miss-hits usually stay in fairway.

However, how does the forgiveness compare to SIM Max? Although some people believe there are no improvements, I disagree.

My SIM Max review revealed that the driver did not seem to be as patient or forgiving. TaylorMade has definitely closed this gap with its SIM2 Max. It is my opinion that the SIM2 Max driver is among the most forgiving you can use right now.
