Sony X90J – Picture Quality

The X90J has what Sony calls a Cognitive Processor XR, which is a technology that the company touts as being able to understand how humans see and hear, making it able to deliver content with stronger contrast, better brightness, and better color depending on what is being watched. This is a huge promise and I couldn’t tell you much more about it when I was watching 4K HDR video. Do you think it does more? Probably. You could tell me based upon how people use their televisions. But it’s true. However, this is only a small portion of the Sony image-quality cake.

What I will say is that Sony televisions are known for outstanding image processing and Sony did not pull those punches here. Combined with that Cognitive Processor is a new contrast booster which all add to the already notable prowess of Sony’s processing. While I will have difficulty pulling out what each individual piece of what Sony is doing here, it does unequivocally equate to a stunning picture quality.

This is why 4K scaling works so well. Poor graduation of highlights with low bitrate content is fixed beautifully and smoothed. Sony is a leader in this technology, and the same holds true for the X90J.

There are some who claim that the television doesn’t provide great viewing angles. However, others I’ve seen disagree. This TV has an LCD backlit display so it can be seen from straight ahead. But if the viewing area is too narrow, color will not appear as bright.

It easily displays glare, which was a problem that I experienced with the television. The screen is very shiny and the television doesn’t get particularly bright either, so it’s not capable of overwhelming even the lightest of reflections. A set of panel LED lights is situated across from the television. Even when they are set at a low setting, it’s very clear to see how the light reflects back onto me while I am gaming.

Sony Bravia Xr X90J Full Array LED For Terrific Television Viewing (Review).

Ray Shaw Audio Visuals Brands Sony Televisions 14 Minute Read The Sony BraviaXRX90J is their flagship 2021 full-array–local dimming(FALD), Triluminous (Quantum Dot), Quad-luminous 4K (VA LED), Android TV. Initial testing showed that this TV is superior to comparable brands in the $1995-$2495 price range.

First, let’s define some key terms. Sony has mastered the art of creating names such as Tri-Luminous (its version of Quantum Dot), and other names, like ULED, NanoCell, QLED, ULED etc. BTW – Sony doesn’t make TV panels. While we know which companies it buys from (and they are reputable, well-known ones), it focuses on the electronics, acoustics and smarts that make Sony TVs just that little bit different – better.

Sony Bravia XR X90J flagship Va LED range (review here & website here ) is available in 50 and 55 sizes, starting at $1995 and ending at $2495. The 2021 range is indicated by a ‘J’ (the 2020 range was referred to as ‘H’). This TV features FALD backlighting as well Dolby Vision/Atmos, HDMI 2.1 eARC (‘H’ was 2020), and an XR cognitive processing that makes it better by using AI. The KD-X9500H, reviewed here, scored 9.5/10 – excellent for an LCD television. We have ‘expectations.

Under that is the X80J range in 43, 50, 55, and 65” from $1449 to $1895. The X80J range has Dolby Vision/Atmos, HDMI 2.1 EARC and a cheaper edge-light panel. It is called Direct-Lit. It impressed us (read more).

The 2021 OLEDS are at the top of this range – the A80J (65 & 83”), and the A90J (55, 65, and 777 ”).). These are the A8H, A9G Master OLED and the stunning 2019 A9G. These OLED TVs are on the horizon and offer some of the most advanced Android OS OLED televisions money can buy.

First Impressions – More Than You Expect

Review was done overnight in a Sydney CBD hotel. It is impossible to do more difficult testing at our facilities. It’s enough for you to be certain (or not) about its capabilities.

First, the Sony technical staff gave the media an overview of all the range’s capabilities. This included the 55″ Sony Bravia XR X90J, along with two 55″ TVs. Sony provided factory defaults to all, as I enjoy shoot-outs. All ran off the same 4K video generator splitter, and the anonymous pair were both top-brand edge-lit Quantum Dot models selling around the same street price. Only one thing is unfair: the X90J comes with a full array backlit so that it will appear naturally brighter.

Sony X80J (L), Sony X90J, Brand X and Middle.

Let’s say the left-facing Sony X80J TV performed better than the X90J. The X80J really is a winner, both for its price and the features it offers (such as Dolby Vision/Atmos). The TV on the right paled by comparison. It was lacking in the bright, sharp colours and brightness of Quantum Dots. And it did not support Dolby Vision either.

After the demonstration, we tried to amp up the TV on the right to get it closer to the others, but even at maximum colour, brightness, sharpness etc., it was still visibly inferior.
