Taylormade Golf: The Tour Preferred and Tour PreferredX, Project (A), Golf Balls. Updated for 2016
October 30, 2015 – TaylorMade Golf , the second most played ball brand on the PGA Tour with three Tour staff professionals currently in the top ten in the Official World Golf Ranking, has announced the release of its 2016 golf ball line-up, highlighted by the new Tour Preferred X, Tour Preferred and Project (a). With these three models, TaylorMade’s new line-up provides exceptional feel, performance and spin around the greens. This line-up was immediately successful as Justin Rose, a staff professional, switched to the new Tour Preferred X ball before he won the UBS Hong Kong Open.
TOUR PREFERRED GOLF BALL
TaylorMade’s Softest Tour ball: The new Tour Preferred ball (4-layer construction, 80 compression), features TaylorMade’s next-generation Speed. A mantle inner layer made from a material more than 65% softer and flexible than previous generations’ mantle. Engineers created the new mantle to give the ball a more natural feel while maintaining its performance characteristics.
Tour Preferred Golf Balls offer a more consistent launch with greater spin for longer irons, as well as allowing you to hit the green from a distance of the same distance and spin rate. TaylorMade’s Soft Tech casting urethane covering, the longest lasting and strongest, is still featured on the new Tour Preferred. LDP, Low Drag Performance Aerodynamics (LDPA) has a 322 dimpled pattern. LDP provides the tour player with the distance and flight speed they desire. Tour Preferred golf balls are designed to suit all skill levels.
RRP: 58 EUR per dozen. Available from 15 December 2015.
TOUR PREFERRED X GOLF BALL
TaylorMade’s Tour Ball with Maximum Control: This TaylorMade Tour Preferred ball has 5-layer construction, 85 compression and features the new Soft Tech cast Urethane cover. This provides more greenside control. The Tour Preferred X is similar to the predecessor but offers low spin off of the tee and low iron ball flight, with more greenside spin. This preference was preferred by top players around the globe.
Taylormade Tour PreferredX 2016 Golf Ball Review
Tour Preferred X uses a five layer structure.
The compression is down a whole 1 point to 87 so is effectively the same as before and there is little change in feel to the 2014 X model. Soft Tech cast-urethane is slightly thicker that before, and has the same number 322 dimples than the standard ball.
Around the green, the Tour Preferred X sounded a bit more firm than the standard Tour Preferred. It also felt similar to a Pro V1x in many aspects.
While the performance benefits of the X will not be greater for players with higher spin speed or faster swing speed, it will still make a difference in your decisions about which model to choose.
Other than the greenside feel and performance numbers, there are significant differences between the two balls. Although the Tour Preferred X spins faster with a wedge due to its higher compression, the feel is more difficult.
Because the Tour Preferred has a longer launch, it spins faster and stops with less rolling.
Although the driver’s performance at my swing speed was fairly similar, the Tour Preferred may have the edge since it covered the same distance with a marginally slower average swing speed.
2016 Taylormade Project (A – Golf Ball)
Joining the pair of tour style balls will be the upgraded Project (a) model, replacing a ball that was launched last year to offer amateurs more spin and performance from 30 yards and in.
With the new 2016, version of the compression, the compression was 70. That’s 18 more than the 88 that the original model had. It is designed to feel softer on the face and give the approach shot more movement.
This helps because amateurs generate about 50 percent less spin than professional players.
Except for this modification, Project (a), which is the successor to the Tour Preferred ball, still uses many of the same technologies. The REACT core provides greater distance while the Soft Tech cast-urethane covers provide durability and give the balls spin and feel.
TaylorMade 2016 Golf Ball Prices All three balls are available beginning December 15th. 2016 TaylorMade Tour Preferred will retail at PS44.99 per dozen. Project (a), on the other hand, is priced at PS34.99 per a dozen.
Taylormade Tour, Preferred Forgiving
TaylorMade Tour PreferredCB (or Cavity-Back) irons have the longest and most forgiveness irons in the entire set. These irons look just like the SpeedBlade, but they are a little smaller, so will be more suitable for those with lower handicaps. Speed Pockets in the sole are the key to forgiveness.
