These are the Mosquito-Free Tips I Use This Summer

Maine is where I reside. This is how I eat my dinner outside, without having to eat.

It is so horrible.

Maine is my home. If you’ve spent any time here, then there is no further need for me to establish any bonafides about the volume and belligerence of our insect population. This year was a difficult one because of the long winter and the rainy and frigid spring. It provided perfect conditions for our state’s black fly, tick, and mosquito populations. “It’s a pretty heavy infestation,” says Griffin Dill, an Integrated Pest Management Professional at the University of Maine.

As it turned out, he was only confirming what I had already known: the bugs are horrible. But, this year, I resolved to fight back. It was my goal to have dinner outdoors with my family. And I am pleased to report that I have found an affordable solution that has helped me achieve this goal frequently throughout the summer.

Thermacell offers a variety of mosquito-control devices. I reviewed the Radius ($40 Amazon), Patio Shield ($20 Amazon) and MR300($25 Amazon). Even though Amazon’s reviews tend to be mixed on these three items, they worked for me and were almost equally effective.

Each model is slightly different but they do one thing in common: They each release a vapour containing the synthetic chemical from the chrysanthemum plant. Radius uses metofluthrin. Other models use allethrin. Dill, the bug expert claims that these compounds trigger insects’ neuroreceptors to stop them eating. In other words, the mosquitos get stoned and lose interest in biting you.
