Galaxy A01’s Camera Fails to Take Portrait Pictures

Galaxy A01 captures clear and colorful images in bright lighting. Some photos make red and green pop. Some images were too dark and the sky ended up being blown to black. Later in evening, I was capable of taking a great shot with the blue sky and the background equally exposed. The camera has an 8X digital zoom that is decent at getting more details from faraway objects, but image quality does get muddier and washed out the closer you zoom.

Live Focus portrait images were also very inconsistent. While some photos turned out okay, others showed the background blurred and the object in the foreground. This happened even though I checked that it was available. Samsung indicated that the company is investigating this issue and would be updating the review as soon as I heard back.

The camera records 1080p video. The video quality is good, although the camera doesn’t offer optical image stabilization. This means that footage may not be sharp if you move around.

This shot shows bright and colorful flowers that are sharp.

While this picture shows a rose-garden, it’s not the best.

The foreground and sky are both well-captured in this image.

An example of the Live Focus feature not working (left) and working (right).

Good Call Quality Despite Slow Lte Speeds

In the US, Samsung offers two variants of its Galaxy A01: one version for Verizon and one that is compatible with AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s networks. Each version has extensive coverage for each carrier. Cricket Wireless supplied our review unit, which was then tested using Cricket’s Chicago network.

A microSD slot is located to your left for more storage space that you may need.

It has 2x10mHz carrier aggregation over the downlink, and 64-QAM encoding. It is an old modem and can only use carrier resources in a slower way than newer options like the Snapdragon X9 Motorola Moto e modem.

Unfortunately, data speed is slow. The average speed of our tests was 2.3Mbps down, and 3.2Mbps higher. It’s pretty slow for Cricket. Video and audio buffering will occur when there is congestion.

However, the call quality is superb. The maximum volume on the earpiece at 86dB is sufficient to be audible in noisy streets. Our testing calls were crystal clear with no noise cancellation.

It is disappointing that the speaker’s backfiring function does not work well. Although volume peaks at 94dB the speaker is muffled when placed on a desk. Timbre is brassy, with over-represented mids and no bass.

Bluetooth 4.2 is available as well as dual-band WiFi. There’s also Bluetooth 4.2, but no NFC. The phone you are looking for isn’t right for you if your goal is to use the phone for transport passes or mobile payments.

Samsung Galaxy A01: Reviews

Samsung Galaxy A01 PC Mag A $150 phone is typically pretty basic, but the Samsung Galaxy A01 is still outclassed by other budget phones. Sure, it has a vivid display and excellent battery life, but it stumbles just about everywhere else. Its Snapdragon 439 processor slows down on even the most simple tasks. Additionally, there is little room to install apps once you have cleared out the bloatware.

CNet Reviews the Galaxy A01: A budget-friendly, basic Android phone. 68% Galaxy A01 reviews. This is Samsung’s cheapest budget smartphone in its A-series. The $150 price tag is reasonable, but we have found it available for as little as $100 without unlocking from Samsung. Other features such as its simple design and low resolution screen aren’t too exciting. But the handset covers the basics well enough that, for its low price, it should be a decent device to snap photos, check email, watch videos and, of course, make calls.

Rating: Total score: 68% performance: 70% workmanship: 60% 68% Galaxy A01 review: Bare-bones smart phone for the budget conscious CNet The Galaxy A01 is a no-fuss, low-priced Android phone that is the cheapest member of Samsung’s A-series of budget phones. While it retails for $150 (though you can find them on sale at as low $100 unlocked by Samsung), there are not many things to love about the phone. The phone’s simple hardware and basic features, such as its low-resolution screen and plain design, make it a boring choice. The handset is affordable enough to be useful for basic tasks such as taking photos and checking email. It can also watch videos, take calls, and even make phone calls.
