The reason I chose this one was simple – the price was good and I saw the rave reviews last year’s model received . I was also fortunate enough to have the Legion 5 Pro with me, which was pure awesome.
But this laptop was almost half the cost of the Legion 5 Pro so I had to reduce my expectations. It’s amazing how good it could be at $1000. It’s quite good, surprise! You only need to have lower specs.
And after spending a solid 10 days with it, I can say my search is over. This is the one.

Many businesses use Intel and AMD’s yearly jump in processor generations to reinvent their computers or laptops. Lenovo hasn’t taken its Legion 5i to the next level with its 15-inch Legion 5i laptop but I’m not complaining. Although it’s not a revolutionary gaming laptop in terms of design, I feel that this one could still be attractive to non-gamers.
To give you a few examples of how low-lift the visible changes are in this year’s model, Lenovo simplified the naming convention from the clunkier Legion Y540. A Legion 5i processor with an Intel-based i number denotes it. Lenovo sells Legion 5 with AMD Ryzen 5 (or 7 4000-series) processors. It made the trackpad more intuitive this year, removing the buttons on the left and the right of the mouse. You have greater control over how the pointer moves. The webcam was moved to the top to eliminate the view from the nostrils that the Y540 offered.
The Legion 5i is the only place you will find significant year-over-year improvement if you are looking for them. Lenovo provided the 10th Generation Intel Core i5 H-series and i7 H series processors for this machine. Each configuration also has a dedicated Nvidia graphic chip. The model that Lenovo sent us is the top-end model that can be bought for about $1,350 (at time of publish, it’s discounted to $1,289). It comes with a 1080p IPS touchscreen panel and a 144Hz refresh. The laptop also features an Intel hexacore Core i7-10750H cpu, Nvidia RTX 2060 video card, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB NVMe flash drive. It’s the best configuration available for a laptop capable of playing most games at 60 frames per seconds without limiting the visuals.
However, I won’t be too proud to show off the Legion 5i. It is very similar to the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 for $989 that I reviewed recently. If you only stand a couple feet from the machines, it can be difficult to discern the differences. But the Legion 5i boasts double the RAM/storage, a slightly faster refresh speed (144Hz) than the 120Hz display, and the stronger RTX2060. These specs provide a notable improvement in performance. After reviewing both models, I find the $350 price difference acceptable. However, it does offer the RTX-2060 in a more affordable configuration. Lenovo should have included more, such as a Thunderbolt 3 connector, so that the jump is easier.

These agreements are too numerous for us and we can’t read them all. Because these are agreements few people read or can negotiate, we decided to start counting the number of times that we have to press “agree” for devices to be used.

The Lenovo Legion 5, which is often less expensive than its competitors, offers an excellent combination of speed and thermal performance. It also has a smooth keyboard and features a sophisticated design packed with ports. This machine weighs more than its competitors and has a less impressive display.
Cons
– Poor microphone and speakers
One of my top 2021 gaming laptops is the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro. While it’s been some years since the last time I worked with a Legion gaming machine, I remember linking Lenovo and its ThinkPads for work or school, just as Dell did back in the day. This is why I didn’t consider it to be a viable contender for the gaming laptop industry. However, I was wrong.

The SSD comes in a small 512GB size, which is disappointing considering how many games are being installed. Although it’s difficult to decide between the hard drive size and overall cost, an SSD is still possible to be upgraded.
You should mention the QHD 16″ IPS screen as soon as possible. It is bright, colorful, and 500 nits IPS, making it a joy to use both for work and leisure. Strangely, I use it to view the NY Mets’ first place team all week. The colors in their uniforms pop out and I think the Mets being first is a fantastic achievement. Even though my dog is chasing gangsters, the neon lights in Necromunda hired gun and Fights in Tight Spaces are great.
Legion 5 Pro boasts a full number pad, which is one of its most overlooked features. Although the keyboard was oversized, at first I was worried that it would be too cramped. However, the enter key did not feel crowded and it didn’t hinder my ability to type.

People have always raved about how great the Lenovo keyboards. But I didn’t listen to them. Although I’m not sure, I believe it. They have a pleasant feel with the rounded bottom keycaps. The large touchpad measures 4.7 inches x 3.0 inches, making it a very versatile work computer that is also capable of playing games. The extra storage space offered by 17-inch gaming laptops would make my life easier.
Lenovo Legion 5, Review: What’s good?
Legion 5’s 120Hz 15.6inch 1920×1080 resolution IPS screen looks great. Also, the notebook is capable of maintaining high refresh rate. Whatever game you play, everything appears smooth and sharp. You can’t go back to 60Hz if you play a game with a refresh rate of 120Hz. The display is sharp and bright, good enough for watching movies or reading news articles. The screens are flat and easy to lay flat, with a thickness of only 0.25 millimeters.
Zoom and Teams are not what Legion 5 needs, so the webcam there is very basic. The webcam is the old 720p. This is fine. However, Legion 5’s version should come with a 1080p webcam. Harman 2W speakers sound better than anything you’d expect in a gaming laptop. You can use them to listen or play music as well as watching movies and playing video games.
There is also a privacy shield for the Legion 5 webcam. The keyboard. (Image credit Anuj Bhatia/Indian Express. TrueStrike keyboard offers an excellent typing experience. It took me some time to get used to the keyboard, but it became more enjoyable as I continued to use the computer. What I really liked about the keyboard is the physical layout. Not only it has the full number pad on the right side but the keyboard also includes well-spaced direction keys. My review unit came with a keyboard that had a white-backlit option, but Lenovo does offer a 4-zone RGB variant. The touchpad below the keyboard feels responsive and fast. Unfortunately, biometrics are not supported on this laptop.
What I really liked about the keyboard is the physical layout. (Image credit AnujBhatia/Indian Express.) The review unit had a Ryzen5 4600H CPU, 8GB RAM, 1TB 5400 HDD, and 256GB PCIe SATA SSD. Six Zen 2 processor cores are available, along with twelve threads. This unit also has a base frequency at 3.0 GHz. Nvidia’s GTX 1650Ti GPU is an entry-level CPU that has 4GB VRAM but does not offer real-time tracing support. Although it isn’t the most powerful CPU in its class, I think the Ryzen 5 4600H will do the job just fine considering the cost of the laptop. Both Halo 4 and Forza Horizon 4 ran flawlessly at the normal settings. Legion 5 is stunning!

Legion 5 has proved to be a reliable choice for digital journalists who are working at home these past months. Even when multiple Chrome tabs were open, the notebook ran smoothly and quietly. It was very reliable and easy to use in daily life. However, I do believe that if your job is to render 3D graphics or edit video all day, and you play and continue playing games constantly, then you will definitely notice the fans.
The Legion 5’s battery can last four hours which is typical for gaming laptops. According to how often you use the Legion 5, it will need charging at least twice per hour.
The Price and Availability

It’s $200 less than what we saw in our Asus Zephyrus G15 comparison. And while the Ryzen7 5800U for Legion 5 Pro of Legion 5 Pro performs a few steps below that found in the Zephyrus G15 Ryzen 9 5900HS, otherwise the specs are almost identical.
In terms of performance, we found that the Legion 5 Pro was more value than the Zephyrus G15. Our review also showed this, so it is clear the Legion 5 Pro has a price advantage. This laptop is not the only one with limited availability, as all laptops in the RTX 30-series are hard to find.
Verdict – Its only weakness is its lack of bling
The Legion 5’s interior is about as dull as the Volkswagen Jetta. It’s a reasonably priced, well-rounded package that won’t wow you, but it also doesn’t seem like the kind of device that will ever let you down.
There are no issues with the specs or performance. It could certainly do with better speakers, but under a lakh, you’ll be hard pressed to find a gaming laptop that offers more value.
