It’s all about the looks and how you feel

The overall sound and feel is slightly better than those of the I20s. This also applies to pure shots. I’m able to more easily discern where on the club I’m making contact, and with center strikes it all disappears into that Ahhhh! nothingness feeling we all yearn for.

Ping’s i25 pitching wedge.

Address shows that the i25 is significantly bigger than Ping’s S55 Irons, especially the long irons. Ping made sure to smoothen the transition from the top to the heel, as well as rounding the toe to give the irons a traditional, pleasing look. Ping made sure that the back of irons is invisible even though the top lines become thicker in long irons. That’s a major complaint for some good players. With the short irons the blades and top lines are shorter, which gives the better players an easier look.

The i25 irons look amazing in the bag. Their “Foggy Chrom” finish reduces glare when at address. CTP adds an elegant look to the cavity of the irons and a touch of sparkle that’s hot in the world of golf equipment.

Ping Anser Forged gamer irons have C-Taper shafts. These irons are expensive but well worth the cost. It took a lot of back and forth before I finally decided to purchase the i25s equipped with the C-Taper shafts. Comparing the set to Ping’s demo set, with its CFS shafts, I can say that Ping’s CFS shafts work better in the new i25s than what I had in the old i20s. The CFS shafts give me optimal spin across the set with the i25s, while the C-Tapers are better for the Anser Forged. There may be a slight variation in your mileage.

What about the diggers and sweepers out there? They have a better sole grind, which is easier than the i20s. This was readily noticeable to me when I was setting up too much on my left side and coming in steep early on in the review process. That was eventually resolved by video, but the i25s did a great job.

The takeaway

You may have read my article on Ping’s Play Your Best philosophy. I didn’t answer the question of what is in Marty Jertson’s 2014 bag as Chief Designer. Marty Jertson will likely hit his second round with the Ping i25 irons if he qualifies again to the PGA Championship. That’s a move from the G25s he designed, and a pretty good endorsement.

The Anser forged or the i25s? I don’t know which one to use. Knowing the variables and sneaky wind, all of the cameras and people around me and the second-shot layout with narrow green landing zones… it is hard not to be forgiven while trying to keep my shot making skills. The Masters’ i25s. Wish me luck.

Ping I25 Iron Review

Review: The Ping Irons I25

Ping is a player iron with amazing forgiveness. He has made the i series irons for years. This iron has always been forgiving and a players iron. Each generation becomes a bit more refined, more accommodating and more player-oriented. The latest version of the i25s is optimized for performance and looks, while offering more forgiveness. All the little tweaks that Ping made to these irons make them a really good combo for the lower handicap golfer who doesn’t have extra time to practice or the mid-handicap golfer who likes the compact shape, but can still use forgiveness. The Ping i25 is a great iron for players.

This is my first i-series iron review so I can’t compare them to previous versions, but I’ve played all of the recent S-series irons and played a few G-series ones too. Obviously they are in between those lines and fit the player that has game, but could use some forgiveness. It is the look of the i25 irons that I find appealing. Their compact design and foggy chrome finish make them attractive to be carried in a bag or at the address. The top line is thinner, while they have a mid-sized sole. They are fairly clean in the cavity with the sleek dual stabilizing bars and the low tuning port across the bottom. I had mine built with DG S300 shafts in the black dot heads and stock id8 grips. They were D2 in all areas. For the bulk of the set, you should consider their CFS shaft design.

You can order 3-iron-LW Ping i25 Irons. A 4-iron-UW (Gap Wedge), I chose to play the Tour Gorge SW(54*), and LW(58*). This bag is perfect for me as I can swing my irons very well. What I really liked about them is their progressive offset. Ping’s new i25 irons, while there are many other clubs that have it, is the best. Wedges don’t need much off-set, but the 4-irons provide enough to be easy to hit and take you airborne. Every head is unique and each iron looks different. You can see that the off-set is not large in the 4 iron, but it does help. As you get closer to the scoring irons, it becomes less noticeable.

are no different. These are very strong at impact thanks to the vibration dampening provided by the tuning port and the tungsten insert. The cast club didn’t make them feel hollow, nor did it find that they felt like a cast ball. The tungsten weight on the toe continues to help balance the head through impact to keep it square and create an even better feeling head.

I did notice that the Ping i25 irons were about 5-7 yards longer than what I consider my standard distances. This is not quite a whole club. It might be about one-half club. The rule was that I wouldn’t swap clubs once I had reached a specified yardage. I did however switch to the shorter club if necessary to get to my target. The dispersion, which is very tight, was the true winner. It may be the shaft and head that caused them to launch slightly lower. They really excelled in forgiveness, which I believe was their greatest strength. I won’t lie, I struggled a bit in the beginning but ended up having great success.

Long irons gave me the best forgiveness. With confidence and not only hoping to hit greens, I attacked them with 5-irons or 4-irons. The 6-iron through 8-iron were great from any lie. Even with my driver in spay mode, it was easy to see the green through the thick grass. They went through without digging. The blunted leading edge and ground off trailing edge yet with some thickness in the middle of the sole allowed me get through the turf without major divots. The U-wedge and 9-iron were accurate from the yards you need to score. For me, the U-wedge 50* was an excellent way to make up the difference between PW (46*), my Tour Gorge 54* and my Ping i25 irons.

They combine the best of both a player’s looking iron and incredible forgiveness. It’s not possible to tell if you should get the i20 irons or not, but I know that older models offer more forgiveness and will be easier for you. Ping i25 club have impressed me for a lot of rounds. They are suitable for all levels of golfer. Ping i25 is a players’ iron that offers incredible forgiveness.

Review of Ping I25 Irons

This year, PING is releasing the newest generation of i-Series irons, the i25. They follow the company’s recent most successful iron release, the i25. Which makes them even better.

You can click each image to see larger versions. THP has been reviewing the i25 irons, in a 3-LW configuration. They are paired with CFS shafts.

From PING about the i25 Irons:

The stainless steel irons 17-4 offer distance control and forgiveness to help you make better shots. The long irons have a progressive design with large heads and wide soles. This allows for extreme forgiveness and high trajectory. To improve accuracy and scoring, compact irons (mid and short) have slimmer soles that are less offset.

To increase distance and height of the golf ball, narrow bars at the end of the irons allow it to travel further. Wider bars at the ends produce a slower flight but a softer feeling. A foggy chrome finish captures the intricate details of club design, including set progression and shape. Forgiveness is increased by using tungsten in the low-toe. Control and consistency are assured by a machined face with grooves.

Golfmagic What should we think of the PING new i25 golf iron?

While I have all the respect for PING Irons, there has never been one I like.

Although these guys are known for their exceptional performance, I find the PING irons a bit too bulky and unattractive for my tastes.
