For a restful night of sleep in homes that have low humidity and/or dry heat, a humidifier can be incredibly useful. If a humidifier has the ability to both maintain moist air for several days or diffuse essential oils it is an important item on your self-care list.

A humidifier is seldom an appliance that excites me. Taotronics Ultrasonic Cold and Warm Mist Humidifier appears utilitarian. It has a large 6-liter water tank that takes up more space on my nightstand than some other models I have tried. If you’ve ever had to sleep with dry sinuses you will know how important it is that the humidifier performs.

The Spruce/Kati Begley Cool-Mist is the best solution for summer chills. For summer heat, warmer mists from less expensive models feel too hot. The humidifier could function year round, and I liked the fact that it had both a cool and warm setting.

It is important that a humidifier can be easily cleaned. Warm, standing water can make it easy for bacteria and mold to set in.

With regular maintenance, the humidifier remained in great shape.

Taotronics recommends you clean your humidifier every week after it is taken out from storage for longer periods. After letting the humidifier cool completely I used the supplied cleaning brush and descaled it using white vinegar and warm water. I was able to disinfect it twice a week using a bleach-water mixture. This ensured that mold and bacteria were gone. The humidifier was in excellent condition with regular maintenance.

Unfortunately, cooler days bring cooler nights and my skin starts to suffer. Winter itch creeps its way into my life and I spend the remainder of the winter scratching my anterior thighs, flanks, and along my belt line. While multiple Aquaphor and Eucerine can reduce symptoms, my furnace continues to take its toll. When the outside becomes dryer, some people experience chapped lips. Dry eyes may be accompanied by a sore throat and dry eyes. Additionally, our skin may become more sensitive to the colder air. Children are well aware of the challenges that winter can bring on upper respiratory infections. Whether you ask a doctor or you search online, one of the first things that we may do for our kids is to purchase a humidifier. TaoTronics may be the company that has what you’re looking for. The cool mist humidifier does not require you to boil water, or be concerned about scalding. The cool mist humidifiers won’t heat your water so you don’t have to worry about bacteria. However, they do need to be changed frequently. Unclean humidifiers are more dangerous than clean ones.

The TaoTronics Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier arrived packaged within a 9 5/8 inches wide by 13 1/2 inches tall by 6 3/4 inches thick brown cardboard box. Cover featured a vertically-oriented ink drawing showing a humidifier, with lines that indicate the airflow. The image sat upon an inked city outline and measured roughly 8 inches tall by 7 inches wide. The box’s right side listed the company website. While the panel on its left and top were marked with TaoTronics Ultrasonic Chilled Mist Humidifier. Multilingually bulleted descriptions of the Model TT–AH001 humidifier were provided in the reverse panel. The packaging promised automatic humidity level setting, 3 levels adjustable mist, built-in timer, water filter to remove water bacteria and bad odor, water low-level protection. The bulleted section contained product information and contact details for North America and Europe. The top panel was opened and I pulled off the cap made of white styrofoam. Next, I took out the two-part plastic humidifier. Hidden in the well, I discovered a long 4-bristle brush that measured 3 1/4 inches.

Once the components were removed, I was able to begin the review by looking at the two halves. Starting with the base, the device came with a rather fair 61 1/2 inches long cable ending at a Type B wall plug. TaoTronics provided five buttons that were oriented in an “X-like” pattern along the front of its 5 5/8 by 8 3/8 by 4 1/8 by tall base. On the left side of the larger on/off, there were five buttons: Mist +/–, Timer and Nightlight/sleep. The LED screen, which measures 2 1/4 inches high by 1 1/2 inches wide, was found above these buttons. The reservoir held 8 1/2 inches of water and was 5 1/2 by 5 by 5 inches by 5 by 5 inches thick. It slid effortlessly onto the base. A multilingual manual included detailed illustrations of the humidifier and a page for each of the six language options (English, French, Italian, Portuguese, 39, 49, 48). The upper water tank should be removed from the base. Next, remove the lower filter and fill it with water. A fill line was not visible and instructions did not specify a maximum water level. I loved that there were carry handles on the top/bottom of the tank and that the upper tank seated easily with the lower section. Once the tank is full, insert the filter again and place the reservoir on the base. The instruction manual stated to not fill the tank using the upper nozzle, which was tempting. Also, the instruction manual stated that you should not use the upper water tank to add essential oils. Press the On/Off switch to activate the mist. The fan blower emits soothing sounds and an active LED display on the front panel. You can also press the button to reverse all of the steps. To alternate between the three levels, you can use the mist +/– button.

Press the nightlight/sleep mode button to enter nightlight mode, press the button again to turn off nightlight mode, which activates sleep mode. When in night mode, a blue LED radiates from the device. I was not able to discover the wavelength of the light, but a quick internet search would tell you that blue light can cause some insomnia issues. Melatonin helps our bodies regulate the sleep cycle. Artificial blue light can also directly reduce melatonin and keep us awake, similar to how blue wavelengths in daylight. An alternative choice would have been to use a red-colored nightlight, which tends increase Melatonin. Once the unit is set to sleep, it will automatically switch to low-mist mode. If desired, you can press the +/- button to readjust the output level. Go back to the normal mode by pressing again on the +/- key. It is possible to set the timer for turning off from 1-24 hours. On the LED display, you can view the current time. With the humidistat switch, you can change the humidity level. The range is between 30 to 95%. After the desired humidity level has been exceeded, the device will shut down automatically. This device is water-resistant and will automatically turn off if levels drop below the set level. It is possible to tailor the device to fit your surroundings with many different options.

The device is very user-friendly. Use distilled water to reduce any moisture from sticking to flat surfaces. The multi-lingual instruction manual did a great job at detailing the product but was not necessary in the long run. You can make humidifiers more effective if you buy distilled water from the store or lower-mineral water. You could increase the risk of contracting infection by adding too much moisture or not changing your water enough. The dry, chapped lips and dry throat were no problem for me. This device is a good choice for those who want to sleep well at night. It holds 4L/1Gallon of water and can even be reused sporadically. This device can be quite costly, but is very affordable and offers many neat features. My January baby will be my first and I’m worried about dry skin.
