Charter Spectrum Shutting Down Home Security Service In February

Charter Communications has notified customers of Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks’ home security services that it intends to discontinue both services in February, leaving many customers with hundreds of dollars in equipment that will be rendered useless when the service closes down.

“At Spectrum, we continually evaluate our products to ensure we are bringing you superior, consistent and reliable service. Spectrum Home Security is no more. Home Security & Control by Bright House Networks and Home Security & Control are the legacy of Charter Communications’ acquisitions of these two cable companies. Charter was not interested marketing Spectrum’s security services, but it agreed to keep supporting its existing customers. According to several reports, the top executives seemed disinterested by the idea of selling home security services and products.

Customers were not happy with the news. Many made large investments in additional alarm system accessories that they purchased. The cable companies spent nearly $1,200 adding to the basic security system with motion detectors. smoke detectors. keypads. and other additional cost add-ons. The Zigbee-compatible equipment will cease to work after February. Both companies secured the hardware in their respective cable systems.

DSL Reports’ reader is furious. These devices are Zigbee-based and made by an important player in Zigbee device gaming. Under normal circumstances, you would be able to take all your stuff and move it over to your own home automation solution (Samsung Smart. There are many options for things, Wink, Hubitat, and others. Spectrum’s devices, however, aren’t compatible. They were coded with firmware to be unable to be viewed and used in the Zigbee normal universe. Spectrum Zigbee devices can only view the Spectrum Zigbee universe, with a few exceptions. So essentially after Feb. 5, 2020 your house full of Zigbee devices will be useless.

The criminal part in this is that with literally a 10 minute fix and firmware to those devices BEFORE they shutter their service would open them to the universe of compatible Zigbee devices but you can take to the bank that Spectrum isn’t going to do it, otherwise they would have mentioned it with the announcement. You feel the pain of spending hundreds or even thousands on this.

Home Security clients should make it clear that Spectrum must either purchase all the orphaned devices back OR that they release a simple firmware upgrade that allows these devices to function in the Zigbee Universe. That will give you the ability to select which Hub and finally service provider you choose.

Spectrum instead has signed a deal with Abode, a competing provider, that is offering to rip existing Spectrum home security equipment out of subscriber homes and replace it with a new basic system starting at $179 a year. Customers will need to pay hundreds to replace nearly every alarm-related sensor in their homes, although add-ons are available at a 25% discount. Be aware, however that this offer is not applicable to basic Abode Alarm 8 -piece alarm kits. The cost of installing additional devices and accessories is higher for complex systems.
