Taylormade Spider X the most popular putter on the PGA tour and the LPGA tour. It is undoubtedly the most well-known putter on the professional tour.
Perhaps more importantly, the Spider X has also found its way into the bags of many amatuers around the world, including mine. In this in-depth review, I’m going to reveal what it’s like changing to the Spider X, and try to explain why there is something so magical about this particular putter.

If you are familiar with TaylorMade, the Spider head is one that will be remembered by putters and golfers alike. Introduced many years ago, the continued success of the design drove the company to not only expand on the lineup, but seek new ways to improve the overall construction to further benefit the putting stroke. Spider X. This Spider X model marks the 10th anniversary. The changes are a compliment to the ten-year celebration. Josh, aka JB, on the THP Forum, introduced Spider X in January. He received some amazing feedback from TaylorMade. The most notable visual modification to the Spider lineup was the adoption of streamlined perimeter weighting. This is a departure from what many called ‘exhaustpipes’ in the last Spider iteration. Spider X weights will still be protruding slightly from their original form but have a more streamlined, angled profile to keep eyes from wandering. A preview article indicated that there would be custom weight choices ranging anywhere from 2-12 grams in order to maximise the weight profile of a golfer. Effectively, this weighting system has managed to maintain extended perimeter weighting without being an eyesore.
When you rotate the putter to see the sole of the head, I suspect you will notice the carbon fiber visual in the central mass area. Spider X was concerned with putting weight around the perimeter of their head to maximize stability and MOI. The first carbon composite sole was used to achieve this. A putter helped them do so. Additional weight was also allocated by carving areas on the heels and toes of the frame. This is not easily seen at the address. While the appearance and stability are not compromised, the weight advantages have been raised to new heights. A stock head of 355g can be replaced with 15g of carbon composite. This maximizes the perimeter weight potential.
One final point that we can’t really see but hear clearly is the enhancements made to pure roll insert. TaylorMade introduced a thicker white supran insert to the original pure roll technology. It is an improvement on what has been a very successful insert. It increases the soft feedback golfers get when they hit the ball. This creates an insert that responds well to their touch. These grooves are similar to other pure roll experiences that we’ve had, allowing for the ball to move quickly and precisely towards the target.
When standing over the ball, your eyes naturally will fall on TaylorMade’s new alignment system called “true Path Alignment”. After extensive research, the design has been created to help golfers see the path they’re trying to take the ball. It also helps them to be consistent and confident in their overall direction. As the picture will clearly show, the ball looks extremely comfortable in front of the head. What might not be as visual yet is entirely relevant, is that true path alignment is actually indented into the head, not simply painted on. It has an unusual depth which supports connectivity to other parts of the topline.
TaylorMade’s 2019 color strategy with Spider X is very clear. They have introduced the putter lineup with two standout colors in copper and navy, with the option of having true path alignment in all white, or just the center line in white. We are open to hearing your preferences at THP, but they have both a classy quality that matches the design. Simple, sleek lines with a slantneck and a single bent shaft. This is all in black.
