Performance Testing: A Competent Everyday Laptop

To make comparisons of the performance of these laptops, I collected a bunch of comparable models. To show what else you could get at the same price, some of these laptops are 15-inch counterparts. Others are 13-inch or 14-inch versions with similar prices and features. This table lists their names along with core specs.

There are some discrepancies in the prices. It is worthwhile to include the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 with 15 inch display, although the price of our particular review was $1,699. The unit will perform much better in this setting, however, there are many options available that can be configured for hundreds of dollars less.

Other than that, all these laptops can be purchased within the same range of price, which allows them to come in a variety sizes and pricing options. We currently have the top choice among ultraportables: The Dell Inspiron 147000 (7490), although it is smaller than our VivoBook S15, it’s still an impressive competitor. The Dell Inspiron 13. 5000 (5391) has a smaller screen, but it costs the same as Asus. So it can be useful to look at other ultraportables that are available. The Lenovo Yoga C740 (15 Inch) is a 15-inch competitor. Aside from the Inspiron 13, these machines are all more expensive than the VivoBook, which may end up making the Asus look even better.

Asus Vivobook 15: Price, Availability, And Specs

Source from Windows Central

ASUS VivoBook 15 model number F512JAA-AS34 I received for review features a 10th generation Intel Core i3-1005G1 CPU (CPU), 8GB RAM (RAM), and a 128GB solid state drive (SSD). It is a 15.6-inch FHD model that costs $450 to $500. That puts it right in the middle of our budget laptop range. You can find it at major online retailers like Amazon, Walmart and Newegg.

Below are exact specifications from my review unit.

Asus Vivobook 15: Competition

IdeaPad 3 15. Source: Windows Central

Review of the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15 was done recently. The $400-price laptop is designed for the VivoBook 15 and the VivoBook 15. The keyboard works well, but there is no backlight. RAM and SSD can be upgraded, the camera shutter is available, as is audio and battery life.

The IdeaPad does not make it onto the Best Budget Laptops list for a number of reasons. It has a small touchpad and is loose. The HD LCD display, which can be upgraded for an extra fee to FHD, is terrible. While performance is comparable between the IdeaPad 3 15, and VivoBook 15, the ASUS laptop excels over the Lenovo.

Acer Aspire 5. Windows Central

There’s also the Acer Aspire 5 in the same price range. It has an 11th Gen Intel Core i3 CPU for better performance, and it offers considerably better battery life. FHD is the only problem. I choose to go with the ASUS or the Acer because it has a superior display and provides better performance.

Surface Go 2 Surface Go 3 can be for you, if your goal is to have a premium 2-in-1 that has better display and performance. For more information, take a look to our top picks for Windows laptops.

Share All Sharing Options For: Asus Vivobook Pro 14 Oled Review: Snappy Performance And A Smooth Screen

“OLED screens in affordable machines” has been the running theme of the laptop market this year. The OLED laptop has gone from being a premium product to a more affordable one with the 13-inch Chromebook Duet 5, Lenovo, and other options such as Dell Asus 13-inch Windows models.

Asus Vivobook Pro 14 OLED aims to put OLED into a new form factor, the midrange computer. It is the OLED 14-inch laptop and will also be the first OLED laptop that has a 90Hz refresh speed. It won’t be able to earn any of these monikers until the device is actually released. Samsung and Asus have not yet claimed the release date. It comes with AMD’s 8-core Ryzen 9 5900HX processing power and Nvidia GeForce GTX 3050 graphics. It’s targeting creative work, on the go, on a budget.

With that in mind, my test unit (16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage) is a strong package for $1,199 less than half the MSRP of a comparable 14-inch MacBook Pro . (Samsung gave me that price with the heavy caveat that it could change prior to release. If that occurs, you have my word and I’ll change the Vivobook score accordingly. The Vivobook has good ports, is not heavy and should be able to handle any video calling requirements you may have. You will still find some strange things in the device, even though it is more costly than many other devices at this price. Although the machine is powerful and efficient, it may not be the right choice for every day driving.

Plus, handy numpad in the touchpad.

You might be considering the Vivobook because of its screen. You can trust me to vouch that the 2.8K (2800 x 1800) OLED panel (16:10 OLED display panel) is superior in resolution and detail than most OLED laptops. You can see the contrast, bright colors and details. This OLED panel reproduces 100 percent of sRGB’s color gamut, while achieving a maximum of 399 nits. The trademark of OLED technology, of course, is that blacks are totally black (since the individual pixels just turn themselves off). Samsung claims the panel emits less blue-light than other screens. You can also choose an “Eye Care”, which yellows the screen slightly, in the MyAsus App.

While the 90Hz refresh rate is not necessary for most people’s job, it is a great bonus. Once you become accustomed to the speed, scrolling can feel pleasantly fluid. However, going back to 60Hz can make it painful. This is certainly going to be one of the smoothest screens you can get at a $1,199 price point (again, assuming that the Vivobook stays there).

Asus and Samsung in one.

ScreenPad is weird…

The Asus Vivobook S15 (S532F) proves, in more ways than one, that less is more. Following in the Ultrabook footsteps, this quality portable machine keeps everything lightweight and thin yet powerful enough for some light photo editing. And, that’s without forcing you to break the piggy bank.

Asus Vivobook S15 S532F’s most notable features include a large 15.6 inch display and high-performance CPU performance. This allows it to compete with the rest of the market. This ultra-portable body is another selling point.

So is the Asus Vivobook S15 S532F the best laptop out there? It’s certainly one quality machine. This Asus laptop can be slimmed down and lighter for anyone, regardless of their budget.

The Price and Availability

For the VivoBook S range there are a lot of options (and confusing model numbers), including both 14 and 15-inch screen sizes as well as i5/i7 processors.

Windows 10 Home models and Windows 10 Pro versions are available. Asus is a bit more difficult than that. Most of the models don’t sell from their own website, so it’s best to find the VivoBook through Amazon.

Although VivoBooks are competitively priced, 15-inch VivoBooks starting at PS550 (about $700, AU$1,000), with an Intel i5-8265U running 1.6GHz along with 8GB and 256GB solid states drives.

We tested the highest-end model which has a quad-core Intel i7-8565U at 1.8GHz and Turboost up to 4.6GHz. This model has a solid-state storage capacity of 512GB. The price is also lower at AU$1,700, with 32GB Intel Optane high-speed memory.

They share the same HD 15.6-inch display (1920×1080), but the i7 model is also equipped with Asus ScreenPad 2.0. It’s a unique trackpad that doubles up to be a mini touch-screen and allows you to control various apps from the VivoBook.

Asus Vivobook Pro 16X Oled (Amd) Review: A 16-Inch Creator Laptop With Great Battery Life

The Vivobook Pro 16X might benefit from more attention to the hardware design, but it’s solidly built and there’s a lot to like under the surface.

The 16″ Asus Vivobook Pro 16X, which is compatible with AMD or Intel processors is geared towards creators.

Vivobook Pro 16X is part of a new range of Asus laptop brands, including ProArt and Studiobook models. These are designed for ‘creators. These laptops are available for professionals and hobbyists.

Vivobook Pro 16X is equipped with a 16in OLED screen. The OLED screen supports all DCI-P3 colors and meets Pantone Validated requirements. These models, both 14 and 16, are first to be able to use the new VESA VESA DisplayHDR true black 600. My review unit has an AMD Ryzen 5000 Series CPU. The Vivobook Pro16XOLED also comes with discrete Nvidia graphics. The review unit I received costs PS1,799 in the UK, plus VAT. Official pricing in the USA is unknown, however, it is likely to be around $1,399.

To transport this laptop, which weighs in at 1.95kg (4.3 lbs), you’ll need to have strong shoulders. The 120W charger can also be carried around on your shoulders. A carry case will need to accommodate the laptop’s bulky dimensions — 360.5mm wide by 259mm deep by 18.9mm thick (14.19in. Dimensions: 10.20in. x 0.74in. You will also need the charger and other accessories.

The aluminium chassis is solid, with little flex evident in either lid or base. However, there isn’t much style to be seen here. A striped logo on the lid, on what looks like a stuck-on label, joins a larger Vivobook label. It looks strange on my slate gray review unit and could look worse on the sliver model. You can also pick up fingerprints on the lid, so be sure to keep your hands clean.

Conclusions

The Asus Vivobook Pro 16X would benefit from more attention to hardware design. However, it’s well constructed and contains a lot of good features. It has a great battery life, an excellent OLED screen, and a comfortable keyboard. The colour scheme of the latter may not be typical, but it doesn’t hinder its useability.

The DialPad has potential, although some may find it a bit fiddly to get on with, and it’s a shame the speakers are somewhat underpowered. Although the price tag is steep, content creators might find it worth the investment.

Trackpad and Keyboard

The VivoBook Pro 15’s keyboard looks identical to that of the VivoBook Pro 16X, which we just reviewed.

Good layout. It is OK. The Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys are binned both as secondary for the Arrows Keys and also for certain NumPad sections keys.

This keyboard is a good choice for most people who want to be able to type quickly and accurately. After spending the past weeks using this keyboard, it has become one of my favorite typers. I am impressed by the quick feedback and quality of the actuations.

White illumination is available with three brightness levels, an indicator for Caps Lock, and the option to turn off the light by simply swiping over the clickpad. While the illumination system is white, some light still escapes below the keycaps.

Because the VivoBook Pro 15 comes in the darker colors, the keyboard is black and provides excellent contrast with white illumination. The silver version of the laptop comes with the same keyboard as the VivoBook Pro 16X. It is usable but not quite as easy to read.

Asus placed a large clickpad, centered at the armrest, on its VivoBook Pro 15 line. It’s made out of plastic, but still feels good to the touch and performs well with swipes, gestures, and taps.

Although the surface feels a little fragile and rattles when you tap the lower part, the clickpad works well for the mid-range segment.

Is Asus Vivobook A Good Brand?

Is Asus a Good Laptop Manufacturer? Yes. Their laptops have a great reputation for quality, and are comparable to any top-selling laptop brands. Asus’s goal is to give budget buyers the options they want at a cost-effective price.

Is Asus Vivobook Worth It?

In a nutshell, the Asus VivoBook S15 is one of the best laptops we’ve tested in recent months. While it cannot handle heavy gaming, the Asus VivoBookS15 is just as capable as the 16″ MacBook Pro. However, it is lighter and more cost-effective. December 2, 2021
